Okay, Hypothetical...

I just got home from a musician meetup and myself and this guitar player were talking about mods that might be cool if they could work, and our big discussion turned to this crappy guitar I have in my closet that I haven't touched since I bought it. It's a $100 Squier franken guitar with a 25.5 scale.

We started talking about Fender VI Basses, and started wondering if we could mod the existing guitar to a baritone scale by moving the bridge down to the 30.325 inch scale spot and treating it like a baritone with a capo on the third fret.

My position was that it could be done and we should get my screwdriver and give it a whack, and his position was that the frets would be all off and it would never be in tune.

I thought I'd consult some experts before I trash a useable guitar.

Any ideas?

Hi.

Your guitar player was correct, don't ruin the guitar by moving the bridge.

Ther was a couple of threads about the subject not long ago. The scale lenght really doesn't matter as long as the string gauge is heavy enough for the desired tuning. IOW if You want the standard tuning, use heavier strings (than with a "normal" scale).

Regardless of where a capo might be, the frets are positioned to require a bridge at a specific place. It is already there. If you move the bridge, the instrument must be re-fretted, or a differently fretted neck installed.
