pickguard madness

not really lutherie, but what the hell. yesterday i spent a lot of time messing around with this pickguard, in an attempt to do a cloth finish. it used to be newspaper collage, but it was yellowing and tearing and such, so i thought it was time to update.

so two things-
1) it smells horrible. i put a few coats of spray-sealer on it and it took longer than expected to dry. now it just smells. will this go away?
2) any ideas on binding the edges? what i did, rather than glue the fabric down and cut along the edges was kind of fold it over the edges of the pickguard and glue it on back. but now (after some work that could probably have been avoided), some of the edges are cut or ripped. so is there some kind of black tape or something i could get around it?
