Potential Wood Problem, Help Please

Sign in to disble this ad
Well I have just noticed something that may or may not have an impact on my build.

I was looking for some information on partridge wood because there is a rather damaged desk that I can get for next to nothing an strip down for timber.

The wood in this desk is supposedly Partridge Wood, but I am rather sceptical since for all intensive purposes it looks like Wenge to me.

This is where the problem comes in. I am doing a build out of Bubinga and Wenge, now when i purchased the timber I bought Pange Pange which supposedly is Wenge.

But, in browsing around for information on Partridge wood I found the following and it is making me a little worried.

http://www.righteouswoods.com/imported_hardwoods.html (Main Page)

http://www.righteouswoods.com/wenge.html (Wenge)

http://www.righteouswoods.com/panga_...otic_wood.html (Pange Pange)

If you want you can see some samples of the wood being used at this link and provide advice as to whether I have wound up with Wenge or Pange Pange and whether I am going to have to start over as a result.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

What exactly is the problem? Is it that the bass has to be made with wenge, and not panga panga?

Literature I've seen agrees with what you've posted: the two are related species. They have very similar properties, and panga panga is a little lighter in color.

Here's some more info. But the two are lumped together, which maybe is a cause of the confusion if people think they are the same:

Wenge and panga panga are in the same genus. They are for all practical purposes the same wood and I'd say it's all but impossible for anyone to tell from pictures which you have.

No reason to start over.

Thanks guys.

I think I was being more paranoid than anything.

Its just interesting that as I thought they were exact same thing and not actually slightly different.

Some good news though, I was phoning around to day in a last ditch attempt to track down some ebony and finally found a specialist supplier that deals in the rarer woods.

Spoke to a very nice lady who is going to get me some african blackwood, great part is it will be a "sample" piece and cost me less than US$10 for a 1000mm X 100mm X25mm piece.

they are almost identical in Ts and workability and even look very very similar grain structure/angle etc.
