Purple/Green fburst Materials

Gentlemen (and ladies, be there any around),

I plan to purchase a Brice 6-string fretless this coming Christmas season, as my gifts from my parents and relatives have traditionally been checks.

This is the bass:

I plan to strip the body down to the quilted wood, and then apply a purple over green burst finish. However, there is one pressing predicament; I can't find any trustable purple stain. Not even StewMac has purple.

The bass is going to basically be a Liquid Tension Experiment tribute, as it's in the colors of the first album, and will have the words "ACID RAIN" painted on in black at the end. But I can't do it if I can't find the right color.

For reference, here's the cover:

All help appreciated!
~Wes

Look for aniline leather dyes. You'll probably have to experiment first to make sure the colour works the way you want. Try also searching for magenta and violet instead of purple...

Woodburst stains are very bright and strongly colored. The company site seems to be down, but their product is still listed with some retailers.

Lockwood has some strong colors also. http://www.wdlockwood.com/main.html

My question would be, how could you possibly do something like that album cover, with the strongly demarcated green and purple areas, using stain on wood? Stain bleeds. There are ways to reduce bleed, but I'd be really interested if someone knows a way to accomplish that artwork. The most complex stuff I can think of is by on Brubakers, and I think he uses friskets and airbrushing.

BTW, kickass album! "Acid Rain" is good for impressing kids who think "Dragonforce" (or whatever it is) on Rock Band is ultimate.

Be carefull with brice/SX quilts and refinishing. They are VERY thin.

Jones: I don't intend to get anything nearly as intricate as that artwork, I really only posted that for color palette reference. And yeah, Acid Rain has to be my favorite song ever.

Pasda: Thanks, I never would have known that. Good to keep in mind.

Food Color Test

I am only on my second build on basses. Most of the woodwork I've done has been on small wooden boxes, pedestal tables, and a few other shop class sized projects.

For color, I've employed food coloring...the colors are vibrant and VERY penetrating.

When I questioned as to whether or not this would be good to use on a base, one poster asked about fading, and suggested a test...which I am pleased to report has been going on for about 3 weeks.

While the test has only been limited to "red" with only one coat of lacquer, so far, I have seen NO noticeable fading...yet.
