A refin query...

...for those of you who've "worked with the wood"!

I really like "natural" or "transparent" finishes that show off the grain of the underlying wood. One of my favorite finishes is the see-thru white that some Fenders are finished in.

But...

are finishes such as this best applied only on "dramatically" grained woods like ash... or will a wood like alder show thru ok? Would a "natural" finish alder body look ok?
