Refinish a Fender

Fellas,

I have 2010 MIM Fender Deluxe in blizzard pearl. I would like to change the color of the bass to candy tangerine.. Is it absolutely necessary to strip the bass down to bare wood before I do any refinishing work or can I just sand the existing finish so the primer has some thing to grab on to?

You can sand the existing color to 320 and not have to us primer, just shoot the color over the roughed finish
