Removing finish from thunderbird neck

Sign in to disble this ad
I have a Gibson Thunderbird, and while I love the bass, I hate the finish on the neck. I hardly ever play the thing because of it, and 99% of my gigs, I play my Fender instead.

I did some searching, and couldn't really find any info on what I'm looking for. I want to remove the finish from the neck, so that it's more like the Fender neck. What would this entail? Is the process something I can do at home, or should I take it to someone?

Thanks a lot
-Justin

i'm assuming it's a laquered finish , you want a woodier ,satin feel ?

000 steel wool will
knock the gloss down and leave a matte feel .

the most extreme step would be to sand it off down to the wood ,with 220 and 400 grit
sandpaper -then tung oil varnish it.

either way , not that difficult to do at home . i've done it to a les paul with bound
fingerboard ,and it came out fine . just be careful not to scuff the binding if you have it,
be sure to mask off where you don't want to refinish.

goodluck
