repairing and restoring

I have a beat-nearly-to-death but playable 1941 Kay O-100 which I want to learn to restore. Every time I pull it out of the gigbag, it's missing another sliver or two of veneer. I'm attaching a few pictures. I want to know what kind of glues to use, the best types of and sources for veneer, whether or not I should strip off the old varnish and restain/refinish it. . .

Can anyone offer guidance, or suggest a good basic repair guide?

Lets see if the Mod will move this to the Double Basses forum. You don't want any of us touching that bass.

Well I'll offer up a few ideas for you. First off, if you are trying to save the veneer from chipping more, cover the exposed edges until you are ready to start stripping the finish.
You will need to use a "Low Tack" tape preferablly. Scotch tape works well for the short term, for longer term, try Scotch GREEN painters tape. The edges snag on your gig bag, and will continue to chip off if you do not cover those edges. As for veneers, you just have to type veneer into your web browser, and you will find many sources. At the point your bass is at, I would look at stripping it, patching the veneer and sealing it, and then applying a new finish. It may take away from the value a bit, but would prevent it from losing more veneer, and make it playable for many more years. good luck to you.

LMAO Hambone....speak for yourself....some of us have done restoration work..... a lot of it....LOL

The point being that the "double basses" forum is the more appropriate forum for this post.

I understood that part Hammy, I was referring to "you don't want any of us touching that bass" comment.
