Replacing a zero fret? help

I have a zero fret on a really old (60s or 70s) Japanese bass that needs replaced. The g string has worn a groove in it and now buzzes, but only when playing open G.

So I have never replaced a fret on any of my basses. How do I extract it and put another in? What tools do I use? What's the method?

While ideally I would use the same fretwire I don't think it is as big a deal as any other frets because it is the zero fret, and some builders use a taller fret for that (some other builders might agree or disagree with this.) i doubt I could find the same fretwire anyways.

You can take a look at the threads on defretting (or "convert fretless") to find info on removing frets. Look at some of the more detailed build threads to see about how to put one in.
