Rolled Edges - Fretless

Sign in to disble this ad
I have just had my 67 Hofner Jazz Bass turned into a fretless by master craftsmen Ronnie Griffin of Waycross, Georgia.

What affect would "rolled edges" have on the fretboard ?

Do all uprights have "rolled edges?"

If by "Rolled edges"? youmean beveling the edges of the fingerboard? Or just relieving the angle. I do it to my fretless basses It makes for a much more comfortable play. The first I tried was fretles Jazz neck I got from Warmouth. The factory edge was near painful it was so severe. I used a radius block and then a soft sanding pad to just break the edge down to a more round bevel. PLays like....you know, don't make me say it.

"Rolled edges" are just the edges of the fretboard rounded over to knock down the edge corner, and is intended to mimic the effect the wear on a well-played older instrument. Some folks actually take a rolling-pin approach to this by compressing the wood, it is just as easy to round over the edge by sanding.

It is one of those small things that greatly increases the comfort/playability of a bass.

Wish I'd known about you guys when I was building my T-Bird. That fingerboard blank (and to a greater extent the peghead angles) Made me weep. Plays great after all though. Keeping your address.
