I first like to get rid of the big pieces with a band saw, and then I like to sand it down with either a belt sander or a hand sander.

Bandsaw----->template/router------->sander of sorts (hand, spindle, etc.)

Bandsaw > Hand tools (rasps, chisels) > sanders

except that if you use a spiral bit, you barely need to sand...
