severely smoked stained binding looks awesome on an old les paul.

I just saw a late sixties Les paul custom with the binding completely yellowed. It was so pronounced and we were wondering if anyone re-ranch or the likes had a way to simulate this distinctive finish. Man did it look good.

We don't employ much bindings in our custom basses except for maybe some neck binding.

But it would still be a cool tool if it were possible to recreate.

Stew-Mac sent out a news letter about that in the past; if you go through their site and look for a section called Tech Tips, it should be possible to find. Good luck!

Edit: here's the section. I'll try to find the specific issue.

My old Ric's binding was almost that yellow! Not quite but getting there.

No problem! It's great when I actually have something pertinent to contribute.
