Short Scale P Neck - 1 3/4'' @ Nut?

Hi,

I'm wondering if anyone has ever heard of or built a short scale neck with a 1.75'' width at the nut? Any short scales I've looked up are 1.5'' at the nut, whether they are P or J style necks.

My reasoning for this is that I find the width of a P neck to be comfortable, but I would prefer a shorter stretch from fret to fret. Anyone see any problems with this?

Thanks,

Ste

Sure, my SSB model basses are 30 1/2" scale length and 1 3/4" (or 1 11/16") at the nut. It's a great combination. It always bothered me too, that most short scale basses are built with narrow necks. Why? To me, it makes them feel like they are made for kids. Mine are relatively wide but thin front to back, and with a modern back profile.

Just looked it up. Very cool bass, maybe some day when I have the money I'm a big fan of the scroll basses too.

Now to see if I can find a way to do it on the cheap haha.

Cheers for the help, keep up the good work.

I agree with Bruce. If you like a wider neck, there's no reason not to build a shorty with the nut width you want. A short-scale bass should be as manly and burly as you are!

Think of it this way. If you capoed a 34-inch scale neck at the 2d fret, you'd have something like a short-scale (30") neck... and the "nut" would be even wider than without the capo.

Haha I see what you're saying, so I should just lop the head and first two frets off my jazz Actually, killing a jazz bass neck could be an easier way to get to what I want, not sure if I want to headless though.

I'm trying it out with the capo now, feels pretty good. Also a Jazz neck at the 2nd fret is actually ~ 1 11/16''. If I didn't want the option of those high notes, I could just tune down a step and play like that. Quick fix
