some wood photos, and cherry for fingerboard?

Ok, just scored some sweeeeeeet flamed cherry and need to show it off.

7'5" x 6" x 1"

Not sure what I'm doing with it yet, but daymn is that pretty...

12" is a narrow body... could just use it for wing tops I suppose.

Is cherry stiff/solid enough to use as a fingerboard? anyone have any experience there?

You could use it for the top of a 2 layer fingerboard if you wanted to coat it with epoxy. Put a layer of ebony underneath it. I like Cherry, nice to work with. Have fun..t

6" is fine for a body top if you do a through the body neck or a center body block a'la Carl Thompson. go to his site and check out how he butcher blocks his body, it's like 100 pieces of wood on each!

Yeah, I've seen plenty of butcher block basses, generally not a big fan of the style though.
And with a neckthru it would definitley work, using cherry for the wings as I mentioned in my OP.

I would worry about cherry as a fingerboard. I would think it would not hold fret tangs particularly well as it is a bit softer than maple.

Use it for necks, tops for neck-through or center-blocked basses, and/or furniture.

should have mentioned that it would be fretless...
wonder how it compares to rosewood. *goes googling*

.55 for american cherry, .75 for rosewood.
Probably a little soft for a fingerboard methinks. oh well.

I wouldnt recomend cherry as a fingerboard. Id say it is a little denser than mahogany...much too soft for a fingerboard.

i saw only great fretted cherry boards, but as mentioned, a beautiful mirror epoxy-coated fretless..no problem. thats what i would go for. and walnut wings....

nice piece anyway. enjoy
