summer bass build

My 10 year old son has been playing bass and sketching unusual guitar shapes for awhile and wanted to build one. That's what we did, with the assistance of my father and his well-equipped shop, so it took three generations (and two weeks) to make. The body is a slab of leftover IKEA butcher block countertop, topped with bookmatched maple. Pickup was made for an ESP bass, or so I'm told. Neck (with paddle headstock) was purchased from an outfit shipping from Hong Kong. The guitar is not without cosmetic flaws but for a first effort we are all very pleased with ourselves. It plays very well -- good intonation, nice low action and the pickup is excellent. Total cost of materials was about $130. Fun fun fun.

There is a close-up pic here.
Another here.

looks great to me, except for the fact that the wood behind the neck pocket makes it unplayable after the 13th fret. but super awesome over all. You're making dad's everywhere look bad.
