FunkyMan, how thick is your body? I think mines a little thicker than normal, I didn't buy a blank but went to a wood shop.

First the blanket was 1.7717 inches, but i thought it was too thick, so i decided to take it to 1.5748 inches, because i measured the jazz bass from a friend and it had that that number, and it was very ligth and sleek! and there's no problems with cavity depth

I'm just working up the nerve to do a build myself.

Can someone point me where I can get one of the printed diagrams?

I'm going to do a similar build (black hard ware and jazz bass), but it'll be more of a modern spin (24 fret 5 string). I basically just need a reference point with a template. I love the all black hardware!

Great! I can send you the plans if you want, but i'm not sure if the dimensions are usefull for 5strings! The only thing you can use are the measures for bridge and neck pocket i guess! Let me know

Before you go too far, did you give any thought to building one without a pickguard, ala Jaco? You're doing all that work to the body, it would be a shame to cover it up.

Drill all your holes before finishing. It's possible to crack the finish if you drill after. Unless you are doing an oil finish, then I think you would be fine, but there is really no reason to wait.

So i decided to put the plan above the body to mark all screw points, also used the control plate and pickguard for reference:





Then after a lot of work with the Dremel 3000, i finallymade the bridge pickup cavity with 3/4" depth.



Next, the neck pickup cavity, oversized, (i saw this in an MIM Jazz, and thought it should be easy, the other cavity required a lot of work and detail) this is going to be covered by the pickguard anyway, and i guess it will make the bass a little bit lighter



Then drilling the pickup screw holes:



I put a mark so i can see how deep should drill without going out in the other side













I put some random screws in the holes to cover them when it's time to apply finish

A little candle wax in the holes is a slightly easier (imo) way to fill for finishing, as opposed to putting screws in it.
