Would it be good ? A telecaster 6 string bass in the genre of the '51 era? Perhaps rear routed? Had this on my mind for a while off and on.

I've built several '51 Tele 5's the past few years, and include several variations of this design in my offerings list. as visual reference to my thoughts below, here's one I built for stflbn earlier this year

given the experience I have with designing/building these, I'd offer these thoughts on your 6'er ...

- biggest issue will be getting a 6 in-line headstock with cloverleaf tuners to aesthetically and functionally work. a 5-string in-line headstock is really pushing the 'length out there' envelope IMO, and a six could have string length issues leaving you to purchase a single extra long string for the high string to accommodate the standard length of the low string and still have its wraps hit the tuner correctly

- finding a bent plate styled bridge could be tricky, but I'm sure you could work with Hipshot to have a custom bridge made if you didn't make one yourself

- you're going to need to have a custom SCPB pickup designed and wound. there are several companies that can help you with making one of these. I know, as all of my 5-string SCPB's are custom wound for me

all the best on your project,

R

tele bass 6

While I did not find a thread on TB I was pulling names out of my head and chasing web sites and found this ... http://www.benaventeguitars.com/51Gallery.html
Look at the sunburst bass. It aint got the pickguard but someone has done a 6 tele by this proof page picture gallery. Cool but I am not going to be the first to think of it. Enjoy.

You need to talk to James Hart, on the board. He owns that sunburst 6 string, and the white 5 string next to it.

I love my 6 string 51p

I had the fretless 6 built by Chris Benavente in 2004... and the white fretted 5 in 2003

Both great looking. And I guess you are liking them you've had them several years. Were they spec'd to your wants?

I ordered them to be what they are aesthetically. By default, Chris already had them spec'd as I choose (34" scale, 19mm bridge spacing, wide/flat neck, high radius, etc).

and yeah, they are keepers for life... exactly as I wanted and exceeded all I hoped the build quality would be

James, the strings lay over the end of the fingerboard on the 6er?
