tru-oil over poly finish for an aged look?

I'm getting a used olympic white warmoth jazz body (warmoth done poly coat) from someone. It's a really bright white and I'd love to tone it down a little bit. I'm not looking for a full-on relic job, just not blinding white.

I could do a tinted clear coat spray on it, but I was wondering if maybe a thin coat of tru-oil would accomplish the same result, but with less drying time.

Has anyone done a tru-oil coat over poly before?

I have not tried that ... Also I am not an expert ... but that sounds like you could damage the fininsh on the jazz body.

Try it on a small area first ... like under the pickguard ... or better yet on a cheap sx, squier, or ebay body ...

Remember oil is meant to soak into the wood. A painted body will stop it from soaking in. so bad results are highly likely.

I went to Bass pro shop and to my surprise they didn't have a single bass guitar.

Isn't poly impermeable? Oil will likely do nothing and just remain on the surface.

It might work if you spray the tru-oil, but i think it may take to many coats to get the color shift you want. Wiping it on would look streaky on the white.

I think this would give you the results you want:

Tinted Clear Coat Aerosol

Ultimately, that reranch probably is what I want. I just don't want to have to wait 30 days for it to cure. That may be what I have to do, though.

Despite the name, Tru Oil is not a rubbed oil finish as such, but a varnish. It will dry if applied on poly, but I have no idea if the result would be good.

If I have to do a reranch kind of spray anyway, I might as well do something that I really want like Inca Silver.
