Tru-oil repair?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi guys,

question for you. when I was removing the board on a neckthrough in order to reset it after it began to let go, I damaged the tru-oil finish with all the steam and heat. the finish feels very dry, has dulled, has gone slighty crackled and feels rough to the touch. the finish is bare wood (Zebrano, it's the Zebrano Fretless Four I finished a few months ago) with a shellac sealer and then a few coats of Birchwood-Casey Tru-Oil. does anybody know if there's any repair possible, or am I going to have to strip it and refinish the whole dang Bass?

any advice you can offer me is appreciated.

Daniel

Probably won't have to refinish the whole bass. Lightly sand the damaged spot smooth. Don;'t cut right into the wood. Use 600 grit paper. Then apply a small amount of Tru oil to that spot and slightly overlapping it and wipe it almost dry. When dry apply another and wipe dry. You should be able to blend it in so it won't show. If you've waxed the bass, remove the wax first with naptha or paint thinner.

excellent! I'll try that as soon as I have the board back on, and I'll let you know how it went.

Good. It's worked for me on my oil/varnish blend finishes.

I've got the board clamped up and drying at the moment, and I've sanded the rough patches of finish which are now already looking much better. I'll re-apply some Tru-Oil tomorrow and put up some before and after pics.
