tung oil finish questions

Sign in to disble this ad
I have 3 coats of tung oil finish on my bass that im building. Is it possible to put polyurithane on top of the tung oil to give it a thicker gloss, will it work on top of it? and if not will lots and lots of coats of tung oil give it a heavy gloss? if not what can i put on it to give it a heavy gloss?

in my experience with tung oil, the more coats you go, the glossier it becomes. i have never done a bass but i have done a large table and several smaller projects. it seems that the gloss maxes out after appx. 10-12 coats

I am currently using formbys high gloss tung oil. I have just applied 3 coats to a neck and the finish is nice and glossy already with out any buffing or wax.

Anyone know of a way to get rid of the smell or at least speed up the de-smelling process?

the smell just comes with the territory but i supose you could spray it with perfumes and such. but I don't recomend it. just one of those thing you have to put up with. what i like to do is i'll sometimes put the tung oil on and then put it ontop of my stove and turn on the fan so that will suck up the fumes. or let it chill outside for a hour or two.

Poly should sit over oil as long as the oil is cured. But you should be able to get a high gloss with oil, if you keep going.

If you want to work on the smell, try some Howard's Feed N Wax after you are done with the oil. It has orange oil in it and you might find it masks the smell some.
