Cliff, I have a P Bass Special that sounds great. It's MIM and not real expensive. You might want to think about keeping the J and picking up one of these.....

I got it at my local GC for 599.00 new. I found a Web site that was selling them for 599.00 and GC matched the price.

Cheap bass? Do it.
Pricey/sentimental bass? Maybe not.
Keep in mind you'll need something a bit different in the way of a pickguard(have one made or do it yourself), unless there's a P-routed Jazz PG readily available.

I agree with others - if it's a cheap bass, go for it. If not, please think twice!

Two suggestions:

1. If it's just a thicker tone you're after, you can add a switch to put the two J pickups in series.

2. If you really really want a P pickup, there may be room to fit one between the two J pickups. This would require modifying the pickguard, but you're apparently already committed to doing that anyway. It may also require some routing of the body; not sure. But it would give you the sonic palette of both a P-bass and a J-bass.

A normal Jazz bass has three knobs. I never use my tone control anyway, so I would just wire three volume knobs for three pickups. No new holes.

All you would need is access to a router, or dremel with router attachment. That's what I used. You are also going to have to buy a pickguard. I found mine on ebay. Started as jazz body now a pj.

Hold on for a sec! Why not mod it a little less by using a single coil p-pickup instead? Thats my dream pup combo.

I had it done to my 5 string jazz Bass. I had a Bartolini PBass PU put in, and a tortoise pickguard made. Looks great and sounds like a PBass.
