Veneers for accenting body layers

Sign in to disble this ad
Hey fellow bass players and builders! This is my first time posting here so if I did something wrong or there is a better way to do it please don't hesitate to straighten me out! My question concerns using thin sheets of accent layers when gluing together layers of a body blank. should I use standard veneers or are there suppliers for thicker veneers that are especially suited for this purpose? What are some good sources for material? I have a thickness sander but it would be so much easier, time saving and material saving if I could just purchase a quality product. I am looking for near black. super light, as well as various colored woods. Any other tips on technique or general info will be greatly appreciated.

Regular veneer is fine.

constantines.com is a good place to find dyed veneer (it's thorugh dyed, so it won't show if cut or sanded).

You can use dyed black (or any color for that matter), or any wood veener you want to accent the color with. I use wenge veneer for my black accent and it works great. For light colors I just use regular maple veneer.

The only tip I can think of is that I use staples outside of the body outline to keep the veneer from sliding while glueing.

There is also a company called "Veneer from Afar" out of Lansing Michigan. They carry just about any veneer you could want. I believe he sells on Ebay also, but don't quote me.

thanks for the tips guys. it seems that most of these veneer specialist only carry stuff that is 1/48, 1/42" thick. If I want something a bit thicker like 1/16" would I need to resaw my own stuff or can I contact these cats and have it custom cut/ I have no problem resawing stuff but considering the kerf there is so much waste.
