WezV's bolt-on singlecut 4-string

Sign in to disble this ad
Just finishing up my first singlecut bass (actually only my 3rd bass overall). The design is based on a guitar shape i do, i may have posted the design a while back.

Here's the guitar shape:

Here's tha bass just back from the sprayer:

I wasnt sure whether a bolt-on 4 string singlecut was a good idea but it really does have good access even with the neck pocket covering a fair whack of the neck.

Anyway its made from lacewood (not sure which) with a cranberry acrylised maple top with wenge and maple accent lines underneath. The neck is 3 peice flamed maple with wenge pinstripes, ziracote fretboard and flamed maple b/w/b binding.

Hipsot bridge - toploading or string thru body, basslines soapbars under the wooden covers with the SD 3 band active EQ. Its 35" scale

Finish is rustins plastic coating.

Just need to do some fretwork and string it up!!

I love the design of this bass now, all my initial hangups have gone

Wow. That's nice. So did you put a finish over the top as well?

Yeah, the main advantage of the acrylised wood on this bass was it meant i didnt have to get any nasty dye anywhere near it...

...Although Larry has just messaged me to warn me that it might not adhere. Its been on there a week so far, we will have to wait and see

I have to admit, I'm a sucker for a nice single-cut (especially a 4 string) so my jaw dropped when I saw your bass!
I LOVE that design!! Simply beautiful...
Excellent job!!

That looks real nice. That rustins plastic coating, how hard and durable is it? Do you have spray equipment or use cans?

Very nice! The finish is superb! Let's hope it stays there.

I dig the shape. Kinda like a single cut F-bass. Sweet board with binding by the way. What type of rosewood is that (I'm guessing it's a rosewood), is it madagascar? I like it a lot.

That is looking seriously nice. The shape, and the execution.

What kind of pups are hiding in those covers?

That is a beautiful bass, and I'm normally not one for single cuts. I love the fretboard, and the pickup covers and the top, and the lacewood, and the shape. And that stripe going down the middle. Wow.

Cheers peeps;

Q&A

The rustins plastic coating is very durable compared to nitro and much quicker curing, it can be buffed after a couple of days. This is sprayed but i have got pretty good results with a brush in the past. It drys so quick youc an level out brush marks and build up a good finish really fast. I dont think its readily available in the USA though.

The fretboard is Ziracote with flamed maple binding. Ziracote is supposed to have tonal properties similar to brazilian rosewood but i dont believe that kind of marketing hype . Its hard, looks pretty and has a tap tone like a sheet of metal. Thats whats important to me!!

The pickups are seymour duncan's basslines phase II soapbars. The preamp has master volume with push/pull adjustable slap contour, pickup blend and 3 band eq

Beautiful, I think the shape lends itself to a bass even better than a guitar

I remember this shape when you posted it as a line drawing. Something about it then caught my eye - but it didn't get "hung" up on it, if you know what I mean. It's silhouette was smooth. I'm not a single cut fan but I'd own one like that in a second. Like they say on the MIMF - Make More!
