What websites do you use to look up wood characteristics?

Sign in to disble this ad
I'm thinking about adding links to the FAQ sticky for websites that are good resources for looking up facts about various wood species and such. This isn't meant to substitute for advice given here by folks who use the woods first hand, but rather as a resource for new guys to use in researching the basic facts...

So, what websites would you recommend for new builders to use to do their research? Sites with pics aren't required, but would be nice.

I use Warmoth too, though a site with a little more information for some of the woods would be nice...

Ok, I went through my woods spreadsheet. It has links to sources of info that went into the sheet. I have copied out one link for each site. They're mostly links for individual wood pages, so you've got to backtrack to get up to the site menus.

Looking back at the OP, I must add that many of these are not exactly what you asked for as far as newbie-friendly. They range from that to pure tech.

My friendly local saw mill has some info on a few choice species:

http://www.john-boddy-timber.ltd.uk/species_az.htm

Quite newbie friendly, as it describes a lot of the properties in qualitative terms.

That one got me too - i thought maybe they mean for its density? Anyway, how low is low...

But their working properties are mostly spot on from the few species ive worked with, even if you need to check up on the numbers using another site.

I like this one for comparing wood species for hardness.

It took me a while to find this one, but I like it because it also shows what the wood looks like.

edit: Pilotjones beat me to it, so I'll just do a +1

This probably won't add much to such a long list; and they've changed their site since I last visited there, but Wood Bin appears to still have very useful information...from my non-luthier pov anyway.

Woodworkers source wood directory is a great help for working properties. And Woods of the World has a nice directory for wood also.
