what about a 35 to 31" fan? is that too extreme for say a 12 string bass? whats the most extreme distance you've ever heard of for any amount of strings? just curious whats possible and what others like, i am considering the options...so many... .

Anyways, on a 12 string bass, 4" of fan shouldn't be too bad.

You can do the math from there to a 12. |

His stagger out by about 1/4" per string at the nut and 1/2" per string at the bridge, on a 5-string. But, a) the string spacing is equally important as the stagger, since same stagger with different spacing results in a different angle; and b) on a 12-string the side reach is so much bigger that you might want different angles anyway.
