What bass are we taking here?

Fender, Gibson, MTD, Spector, Fodera, Alembic, Status, Smith, etc?

Pick your poison, "a bass body" is too broad of a term for those measurements.

Thanks.

Fender body thickness is about 1 3/4" and BC Rich can be as thin as 1 1/8"

What do you consider the standard?

I aim for 1.75" on mine, depending on how much sanding the body need sometimes they are less than that. To me the only thing that dictates the thickness is to have enough room for the pots, other than that it could be much thinner. Hey look at a Parker Fly guitard sometime.

My 4 strings are 1 1/4" thick and my 6 strings are 1 1/2".

I use thicker body to improve balance.

I should have said more.... i saw a few hand made guitar and basses this week-end from different builder. it looks like most of the guitar were 1.75" athick and basses were mostly 1.625" i was trying to understrand why? i don't remember where but i 've read that the thicker the body is, the more bass you have???

I believe there are no absolutes on thickness and tone. There are so many differences depending how long the body is, the body style (wings or cut), how seasoned the wood is...and what kind of wood is used. Even with the same type of wood there could be some differences.

I think a consideration on thickness is how dense the wood is (wenge vs ash) and how well the weight balances with the neck.

Of course you want it thick enough for a battery if you are running a preamp.

There are a number of variables to consider, but I shoot for 1 1/2" to 1 5/8" for my stuff. Even F-Bass (which I own and play), who have some of the beefier solid bodies, come in around the 1 1/2" mark. There are no absolutes tho . . .

Nice bass Greenman! I like the way you made the one side thinner than the other so it leans the front so the player can see the strings a little better. cool idea!

I never build that bass. Those pics have been floating around the forum for years popping up on occasion.

I shoot for 1.5-1-5/8"... but my bodies are VERY carved (thought nothing like the above bass) so they don't feel that thick.

the old EB0's were a meager 1-1/8" ... I think rics are 1-1/2"

Yeah, I also shoot for 1.5 plus just a tad. That is about the minimum to allow 1.1" for controls cavity and .200 front and back.
