Wood for nut and bridge

Sign in to disble this ad
Hello all. I've got some cocobolo that I'd like to use for a nut and floating bridge. Is this wood dense enough for this purpose?

Thanks!

I was ellaborating on this quote..... Janka is a hardness scale, hardness and density are not one in the same.

You are quite correct though, Hard Maple is much higher on the Janka than Cocobolo.

Specific Gravity is a density measure based on weight per centimeter/inch/foot/meter depending in either a multi atmosphere condition or a vaccuum. Janka Hardness is based on 100mm square penetration of a pressurized ball.

Density is mass, hardness is the ability to repel penetration, to put it simply.

See the Mohs or Rockwell scales and compare to Janka, and you will gain a greater understanding.

To the OP, Standupright, If you get a chance, get over to the "BassPlace" talk to Lee Miller, he has a good amount of wood knowledge, he just doesn't let people know, plus he has an incredible amount of bass knowledge, and he's a really cool guy to talk with.

Also, get over to Woodworkers source on 40th st and University(if I remember correctly) in Tempe, great place to learn a lot about exotics, those guys there are great.

I still have a house up on Bell and 75th ave in the estates, even though I haven't lived there in quite some time(16 years), I still love PHX, and hope to retire there again someday....LOL Woodworkers Source(it's original name escapes me) was one of 3 places I hung out at a lot (when I wasn't at work at Intel on Black Canyon) the other were Bass Place when it was still in Glendale, and Golden 8 ball which used to be at 35th Ave and ISR across from Shooters world and Levitz furniture....LOL Long since days passed.

so all of that being said. for the purpose of something like a bridge and nut, would janka rating be more fitting due to the type of test to provide the rating?
