Worries about intonation: Go fretless?
A friend just gave me a stripped body (no hardware, pickups, neck, etc.). Since I've got no real building experience, would it be safer to just make it a fretless bass so that I don't have to worry about the intonation of the frets? Or is getting the intonation right not that difficult?

Fretless still requires some intonation. It's really not that hard.

Your choice, really. Are you making the neck or buying one?
If you're making one, then you just need to decide on a scale length, use fretfind to print out the fret locations, and slot the board accordingly. Then just make sure that the nut is <scale length> inches from the bridge saddles.

I plan on buying one, probably from Warmoth.

Just be sure that a Warmoth neck will fit that neck pocket. Good luck with the build.
