I'm retiring from the Air Force gig after 26+ years.

What you need to know is that in addition to being a strong orchestral player, you must be a strong rhythm section player. For the Strolling Strings, you have to play a convincing bluegrass groove on Orange Blossom Special (a little slap judiciously applied is good), switch to tango for Por Una Cabeza, swing NY, NY both two beat and walking, and do the Latin rhythms you would do on a club date (bossa, beguine, etc). All strolling tunes on the job are memorized, some memorization will probably be required on the audition. Bass and accordion are the rhythm section.

They have never missed a pay day (even in '95 when Newt had his showdown w/Prez Clinton). You and your dependents get full medical coverage, 30 days annual paid vacation, and a retirement plan that is better than most Americans can imagine in today's economic climate.

If you have eclectic taste and skills, this is your gig.

Good luck to you!

I play in a junior strolling group, and our conductor always tells us about how great you guys are.

Sounds like a fun gig. I love the Air Force Strolling String, if only I were younger.

Just checked--it's up on the site now. I did have a lot of fun times, and you're not yet too old. Maximum age at time of enlistment is 34, according to the announcement.

Anyone who takes the Louisville audition- we will come to your house, dry out your dampits, put the wrong rosin on your bow, and fill your case with poisonous spiders. Also, you'll never work in a unionized orchestra for the rest of your life, you wretched little scabs.
