Best of luck to you. BTW, I am not on the committee, or involved in any way with this audition, other than having suggested some of the excerpts.

Its a good orchestra with great conditions. The foundation as a whole is quite special. The bass section is solid. Getting an invitation to audition is easy. They'll email you an audition packet with all the info and all the excerpts soon after you send in your application.

Check out the link of the orchestra: http://www.musica.gulbenkian.pt/index.html.en

Re: Gulbenkian, what is it with Euro orchestras demanding 5 string? Is 4 w extension strictly excluded?

usually not, an ext. should be ok. Although more and more often are there pieces which require a low B not to mention composers writing for a 5 string bass . MOst ext only go to c.

I say this playing in a european orch for almost 20 years with a c-ext. Our band states in the audition announcement, 5string or bass with c-ext..

Many orchestras provide instruments for the bassists as they provide tympani, piano, harp etc. So it is not uncommon for a candidate to show up to an audition with a smaller, solo oriented instrument.

G-force is right. They won't exclude you if you play on a 4 w extension. Most probably the orchestra owns 5 string instruments that the players have the opportunity to use. The Principal Bass player is american. I am sure he'd be cool about it.

Its not like the German/French bow thing.

Hi Bubbabass,

I saw that you had posted about being in the Strolling Strings for over 26 years. Congratulations, I bet it was wonderful getting to play with such a great group of musicians.

I'm taking the audition this month and I was wondering if you read a lot of changes and jazz charts with the group. Also, when you took the audition, did they have you sight reading changes? I'm just curious.

Thanks!

This audition can probably be considered as filling the same spot that was open at the last BSO audition 2 or 3 years ago, for which there was no winner. There is another opening in the section as well, and I suspect that they will have another audition for that before long. The BSO certainly isn't hurting for cash.
Maybe if we're lucky, they'll just hold a mass audition like NY and hire even more people at once!

it's for John Salkowski's seat. He retired a few years ago and there was no willer at that time.

Some tunes in the book are in lead sheet style, a couple ancient ones (not on the audition) have a chicken scratch 1st violin part, sometimes with changes, and you have to make it up yourself. Most of our newer arrangements have a fully written part (Bohemian Rhapsody, Billie Jean), that I play as written. A fully written part exists for most tunes, but I have always reserved the right to adjust it. Yes, I recall sight reading in 1985. Don't know what this audition holds in that regard as I am not involved, but you should be ready to do so, IMO.

I've subbed with The Airmen of Note a few times and there you must be prepared to read written lines and changes idiomatically in the same chart.

If you have a strong grasp on a wide variety of styles, including good orchestral chops, this is the gig for you.

You can check out a lot of our stuff at

http://www.usafband.af.mil/ensembles...sp?ensemble=57

Good luck!
