(I've been in the Air Force field bands for 17 years, and have just 3 left before I have to get out.) |

| | | | That was fast! Quick turnaround time (relatively speaking)! Blake won the NY Phil job in June, resigns soon afterward, and his former employer, Grand Rapids Symphony, immediately starts the process to find a replacement.
Grand Rapids Symphony demonstrates that it is not necessary to keep positions vacant for years before organizing and scheduling an audition. I wish more orchestras were like GRS. http://grsymphony.prod.rapiddg.com/news/employment |

U.S.A. | That's an interesting project, do they play standard rep? It sounds like they only play Chinese traditional music from the website but that audition list seems standard. Do you have to be Asian to join?

Something interesting about this audition: they clearly spell out their criteria for screening resumes.
" 3. In instances where there are an unreasonably large number of applicants, the Audition Committee shall meet with the Personnel Manager to screen the applicants. The names of the applicants will be removed or covered and the following criteria will be used in selecting candidates to be invited to audition:
a. Musicians who currently are playing under a full contract in a regional symphony orchestra, or prominent foreign orchestra;
b. Jobbing musicians with an outstanding reputation or other significant credentials;
c. Any outstanding student with a teacher recommendation stating that in the opinion of the teacher the student is eminently qualified to fill the vacancy that exists in the Symphony." |

| | | | an under-the-radar summer music festival employment opportunity in Central City, CO Principal Bass (One-year position for 2013)
Central City Opera
Central City, Colorado, USA http://www.centralcityopera.org/jobs
"To be considered, please send a ONE-PAGE professional resume by email to Mr. Kim Peoria, Orchestra Manager at kpeoria@centralcityopera.org. Please include your instrument in the subject line and please adhere to the application deadlines. Due to the limited time available, these auditions are by invitation only. Do not apply unless you are eligible to work in the United States. Auditions will be held in Denver.
Principal pay is $159.76 per service. There is additional travel pay of $49.69 for each day in Central City as well as a 10.9% AFM Pension contribution. Central City Opera does not provide housing for orchestra members. The 2013 season includes 47 services between June 19 and August 11.
This audition is scheduled for Monday, March 25, 2013. The deadline to submit your resume is February 25. The audition list can be found at http://www.centralcityopera.org/pdf/2013BassList.pdf. Excerpts that are not readily available will be sent when your resume is received."
Note: I thought it was really odd that the other open positions of Principal Flute, Second Trumpet, and Section Violin were advertised in the AFM IM, but not this position. Maybe it's due to the fact that it is only a one-year position.
Central City is kind of an odd place, but hey, a gig is a gig. |
