Hi everyone.
So, I've never posted on any type of forum before, but I'm so desperate for help.
Here's my situation. I'm 17 years old. I've been playing double bass for six years. The only instruction I've received is through my public intermediate and high schools, so I'm by no means a seasoned player. I'm mediocre at best. I graduated high school with no intentions of pursing music as anything more than a hobby. So, in about 10 days, I'm leaving for college. Syracuse University in case you're interested. I'm majoring in environmental science, but I'm looking to join the orchestra as a no credit, recreational type of thing. Of course, I have to audition. With no one to go to for guidance, I blindly selected a piece from a small stack of sheet music I had photocopied from a book my teacher had loaned to me once.
My concern is that the piece I have selected may not be appropriate for a college audition. It's the Russian Sailor Dance from "The Red Poppy" by Gliere. Is it ok to play something like that? A full orchestral piece arranged for a double bass, or should I have gone with a more solo type of thing? any suggestions of good audition pieces that are manageable for a bass player of my level? should I even bother auditioning? There is no guarantee that I will even be able to fit the class into my schedule.
Any advice, even the tiniest snippit is greatly appreciated. Thanks for even taking the time to read it. i know I wrote a small novel for you
