This one is enormous enough (and has existed for about 12 years, apparently)
I think it's a good idea, but I feel like adding in the winner by an North American student overseas coupled with everyone who wins a job here could make it a little verbose.

I agree that there should be more inclusion of jobs won outside the US on this board. The American job market can get quite insular and it's easy to forget that orchestral music exists in the southern hemisphere too! |

I wouldn't say BU is a place where you go to train to specifically win a job, but rather its a place where you can grow into a well-rounded musician. There's a lot of discussion of style and Ed is Avery nuanced player.
At the end of the day though, Nicky, Tristan, and Max all entered and left BU as very hard working and highly skilled, and it was a matter of time before they hit somewhere. |

Music is the same this side of the pond, guys. I can't imagine it needs any special euro-training! Play in tune, with a huge sound, and great time, and nail the audition. I know it's not cheap to get here, but you could mix business with pleasure for an audition.. most orchestras will allow you to play on one of their basses (i know...not ideal) leaving you free to explore for a week or ten bass-free! Another option would be to save like crazy and audition your way around europe for a few weeks.
There are tons of jobs over here, lots of work, and the future looks good. For example, most of the national orchestras in France (i think there are 8) will have a 80-100% attendance ALL THE TIME, and never play star-wars-type gigs. The general public seem to have a pretty wide understanding of classical music too: taxi drivers have favorite conductors, almost everyone knows the name of the principle conductor in their city. Financially it's pretty solid too - many orchestras are expanding despite the recession. It's pretty sweet! Admittedly, Germany is having a few problems: it has SO many orchestras some are beginning to merge, but it's still the country with the most jobs available. Just don't bother if you play french bow.
On a side note - it's a shame european winners only get listed here if they're US-trained. I know this is a US site, but it's still a pity - it's such an awesome resource! | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
