Question College auditions

Hey there, Im going to be a senior in high school and was wondering if colleges have sightreading as part of their audition requirements. Im currently looking towards UNT, Oberlin, TCU, and UT- Austin. If anyone knows about their audition stuff, please respond.

Normally the school's music department will tell you exactly what they want on their website. Jason Heath's website also has a page with compiled univeristy audition requirements from all over the place. www.doublebassblog.org

Berklee

I know for Berklee we had to sight read, and would want to say that it's part of the audition probably for the schools you mentioned. Any music school will want you to read, and the higher level of reading you can do the more things you can be involved with at the school. If you have so many credits to fill in a semester and they include a lot of classes to get your reading up to par, you could be in extra ensemble's instead or other technique classes. Either way reading good will open a lot of doors in your career! Good luck

Oberlin most definitely does not.. I did that audition this year. Wonderful faculty, wonderful facilities... The only thing keeping me from going was the lack of a Master's program there, leaving a lot to wonder about the quality of students there over time..

BUT don't let that sway you. Check it out. You never know, you might fall in love with the place. Oberlin was actually my first choice for a very long time..

There was sight-reading at my UNT audition. Jeff just wants to see if you're fluent in bass clef and sufficient in tenor. As far as how it factors into your entire audition, I'd say your concerto movement, etc. has the most purport.
