Community orchestras in Boston?

In a few months, I'm going to be packing up here in Seattle and moving to Boston, MA. In Seattle, I've played with community orchestras like the Seattle Phil, the (underrated) Puget Sound Symphony Orchestra, and the Philharmonia Northwest.

I'd love to find a good community orchestra to join when I arrive, but the Google hasn't turned up anything that looks promising.

I consider myself a talented amateur. I've been playing since I was in middle school, took lessons through college and was even a music major for my first year in school. I still take lessons occasionally.

Does anyone know of some good orchestras that I could consider auditioning for?

Thanks!

The Boston Civic Orchestra looks like a nice community gig.

Boston Civic Orchestra is good, yeah. You could also look into playing with orchestras in places like New Bedford and Brockton, which are both about an hour outside the city. These are freelance gigs, but if you get to know the personnel managers, it's not too difficult to get in.

You should also check out the Boston Philharmonic. They have a mix of pros, students and amateurs. They're one of the best bands in Boston.

PM me your e-mail and I will send it to my friend. She used to be an administrator and a bass player for one of the community orchestras out there. I'll be glad to send her your info so she can get somethign to you.

Boston Civic, is comprised of some pro and semi pro players, and students from NEC and probably BU. It is conducted by Max Hobart who is the former principle of the BSO. I would consider this an excellent community orchestra. I'm pretty sure they do their concerts at Jordan Hall which is at NEC. It's been a long time since I was involved, so, some things may be different now.

No BU players in Boston Civic, but there's just about an orchestra in every small town in MA, all of them paying little or nothing. Waltham Philharmonic makes you pay to play, and the Dorchester Symphony pays $35 a service. Good luck, and play for everyone you meet, there'll be plenty of work soon enough

The CSOB and Boston Phil look promising, but don't have a lot if information on openings or auditions. BPO looks like it's got a huge section (9 basses? in the biggest orchestra I play with here we're lucky to have 3)

With so many colleges, I'm afraid that I'll get lost amongst the hotshot students.

It's probably going to be tricky because I won't even be arriving out there till November or December. I'm hoping to get into a master's program at a small school out there (rather than finding a job right away), but there's no indication that they have their own orchestra.
