I am auditioning in about a month for my local Youth Orchestra, and I am playing The first movement (Largo) of Vivaldi's 3rd sonata in A minor. Would you recommend playing this piece at a constant tempo (as if with a metronome) or slowing down at points of emphasis (trills, ends of phrases, etc.)? The recording that I have of the piece is the latter (not constant tempo), but I thought it might be different for an audition. Also, I'm playing unaccompanied. Any thoughts?
If it is for a youth orchestra, just play it in time. They're looking to see if you have a good sense of rhythm, to be expressive I would just stick to variety in dynamics, vibrato and good phrasing though.
Oh yeah, fill out your profile, it's the cool thing to do .

I suppose you could do a tad, but keep a good genereal pulse going too. As said before, rhythmic precision, intonality, dynamics, and a bit of vibrato are probably what they're looking for mostly.
I would say its ok to do ritardandos and suck at the end of phrase where there is an obvious emphasis, but I wouldn't do it in the middle of passages that flow as one long line.
