Can we please stop political Avatars

Some are already getting a bit offensive without being specific. This isn't a Ford vs. Chevy debate or Fender vs. Gibson.

Can't we stop this please?

I assume it will get more derogatory as election time comes.

If you feel that way, I would suggest using your ignore list to filter out those whose avatars/views are likely to annoy you. It's one of the things it's there for. I had difficulty using it at first, as I was always tempted to "peek", and usually got annoyed as a result. Once I got past that, I discovered that judicious use of the IL greatly improved my TB experience...and I never had to look at a single avatar that annoyed me for any reason. For me it's kind of like programming my TV to skip stations that consistently annoy me, so I can surf the remaining options in peace.

If you want to show a pic of your choice that's not offensive to me.

Showing a pic of John McCain with "Massive Fail" or something to that effect is expressing your political views on here in a backhanded sort of way and shouldn't be allowed.

Is that wrong?

I'm pretty heavy-handed with my use of the Ignore function, but even so there are several people on here whose musical/technical opinions I value highly, even though their political statements offend me. I agree with f-hutz that it would be an acceptable and appropriate stance for TB to disallow political commentary in avatars. Sure, we'd lose out on some good stuff like MM's devil-horned Condoleeza, but that's a sacrifice I'd happily make.

Is the issue that they're "offensive" or is it that it goes against the no politics rule? Or is one problem easily solved by the other?

Should we get rid of a of the Christian/Jesus based avatars since we're not allowed to discuss religion?

Should we get rid of beer can avatars because it might upset recovering alcoholics?

Should we get rid of animal avatars that don't match the user names?

Should we get rid of all avatars so no one ever has to look at anything that makes them upset ever?

Damn those small clusters of pixels!

You're very correct. I originally wrote just the first question - after that I was on a roll. Those avatars, they angry up the blood. It wasn't meant to be slippery slope, but it seemed to end up that way with the "let's get rid of all the avatars" comment. It was just supposed to be goofy. The whole "omg political ads and avatars!11! nooooo" thing is silly to me.

Under "Edit Options" in your user profile, you can uncheck the box that says "Show Avatars" if it bothers you.

Your name is SuperDuck, but that is clearly a frog in your avatar.

Are people really so sensitive? A little security in your beliefs wouldn't go amiss. If somethings made as a joke, take it as a joke.

I think avatars of political figures whether negative or positive are the EXACT same. One says you support them, one says you don't. By using an avatar of one guy, it says you don't support the other guy. Either all or none, because it's a bunch of crap to have to have someone come down on you because your opinion got on their nerves. You know what gets on my nerves? People that are too damn sensitive about things. How many rampant oversimplifications of guitarists do we see on here? I play guitar, does that mean I'm an arrogant jerk? I might be, but not because I play guitar. This is getting too ridiculous, and I agree with the people that say, if it offends you, push the ignore button. Or hide avatars. The power is in your hands, so don't be lazy and whine about it, you can look somewhere else.

It's like if I took your avatar and posted a big red line through it. Would that offend you? Would you be so offended as to report me? Or could you get the reference that I don't happen to like what your avatar is referencing? It would be completely G rated (if you avatar was in the first place...) and basically presenting an opposing view without attacking anyone...

Please don't take this as being overly confrontational, I just want some reasonable protection to express my views when other views are totally allowed. If the Mods and Admin decide to stop political stuff altogether, that's fine. I just want one solid answer so I know what I can and cannot do, instead of being told on because I offended someone for expressing a perfectly legitimate and non-vulgar opinion.

I don't take political avatars seriously at all. In fact I find them amusing.
Usually I feel that TB is one of the sites I go to that has some of the funniest avatars and sigs I've ever seen.
