I thought I'd post this here to see if a response (at the least) can be brought forth.
I PM'd some of the mods on this topic a month ago, but have not heard anything in response. I'm not sure why, but it could have been as simple as "the other guy will get back on this one".
Anyway, here is the text from my PM, verbatim, placed in quotations:
| Gents, |
I hope I am not rehashing an old topic. If I am, I apologize in advance for not finding out some history.
In a classified posting any reply to the ad's post results in the ad/post being "bumped" back up to the top of the list. The replies can be things like questions ("got clips?", "location?", "weight?", etc.), compliments, or just plain "bump for a great guy" type of comments.
While many of these responses are well intentioned, and many times helpful, they "push down" all other posts every time a response is posted. This seems unfair to all other posts in the Classifieds forums. I'm sure you can do a quick browse of the most popular Classified sub-forums and get the idea. I even have a current a FS ad that has benefited from these actions.
Other forums (read: TGP, for one example) that also have an elapsed time bump policy have changed the forum software that still allows a respondent to post a reply, question, or comment, but it does not "bump" the post back to the top. Bumping the post can only be accomplished by the OP. IOW, the reply is posted, but the post remains at its particular "position" within its forum(s) until the OP replies or "bumps" the post. This seems to me like a much more fair way to allow any/all people posting in the Classifieds. (Hopefully the post will still have capability to be subscribed to, if a member or OP desires.)
Since TB also uses vBulletin I am thinking that it's technically possible. Maybe you have already looked into this?
What do you guys think? Has this been discussed before, and, if so, could you share with me what developed out of the discussions?
Please discuss this with Paul. I cannot include him in this PM.
