I just saw the "Do you think slap bass is overrated" thread closed, and (presumably) as a response, a "Do you think slap bass is underrated" thread started and also promptly closed.
Seems like a lot of the time these threads are never going to have a good outcome, as they start out negative or at least are not "pro-something" and then the wars ensue.
I'm well aware that anyone can take any comment and turn it into a battle of epic proportions, or at least try to, but it seems to me threads with a negative, critical tone of techniques, amps, cabs, players, etc... are just begging to be a lightning rod for the worst of TB.
I think honest, adult-like dissagreement is fine, and people can be capable of engaging in it, but it seems like the viewpoint of X is overrated (and similar) is so often just a thinly veiled effort to validate a "hate" and to find other people to join in to further validate it.
Is it possible and practical to relegate or quarranteen such posts, aside from just closing them completely many pages into the "discussion."
I'm not advocating a pollyanna world of TB, but we know where the X is overrated threads (and similar) go by now, don't we? Seriously.
I actually liked the "Are you looking forward to the new U2 album" thread as the title at least implied some balance and seemed to solicit opinions from all sides. While I was dismayed that the band seemed such a lightening rod for surprising levels of anger/dislike about Bono and the band, I at least liked the intent and wording of the OP. This, much different than X is overrated...
Anyways, I guess If I too am guilty- as a hater of hate, then I accept it.
