2 Transcriptions of Oscar Pettiford Solos!

Sign in to disble this ad
I've transcribed 2 solos and working on a 3rd one (a 5 chorus solo). I do not play double bass, electric only, but I really like his style, choice of notes and rhythm.

I've posted 2 transcriptions (Standard Notation & Tabs) of Oscar Pettiford's solos on "Blues in The Closet"
from a Tal Farlow recording and one of OP's first recorded solo "The Man I Love" from a Coleman Hawkins
Record on my new site. I've also posted videos of the solos so you can get an idea of how it goes as these
recording are not easy to find. Those who are interested are invited to download the transcriptions in bmp format.

If anyone finds any incorrect notes, please leave a comment and I'll correct it!
As for the TABS, it's the pretty much the fingering I'm using in the videos.
Any feedback or comments a welcome.

Check it out here:

Enjoy!

Pretty nice, thanks for sharing these. Pettiford was one of the greats, I enjoyed playing through them. Do you have the chord changes for these tunes?

Hmmm, If I remember correctly Blues in The Closet is a Blues in G with a II-V-I turnaround (Am7-D7). As for "The Man I Love" it's in Cm, 2X16 bars but 2 differrents sections, however I'm @ work now, and I don't have access to a Fake book. Actually, those 2 songs are often found in Standard Fake Book (not facebook)

Thanks for your comment,
you probably hear some of the actual Double bass underneath as I play along the original track.

Otherwise I get the sound using flat-wound strings, and a piece of foam underneath the stings near the bridge. I plugged into a Pod live using the flip-top or Ampeg B15 or Detroit setting, I forget the name...direct into my sound card.

thanks for looking
