Its a standard blues shuffle in E 1,4,5. could be a half step down on the recording thou.

Thanks. I was guessing it is in G. I could tell its a basic I, IV, V but was thinking I might be hearing a quick change in the second bar?

As a relative n00b I'm at that stage of development where it is time to start trying to do my own transcriptions. My ear is not trained.

Then these guys I've started jamming with said let's prepare Kansas City for next week. Plus I'm off to spend all day today with my wife. So, time is not on my side on this one. Hence the request.

I love the way Duck plays this tune. He's doing something different in there. I heard it might be using his finger nail in a sort of "picking technique"?

Any insight anyone.......

I did a few Albert King songs in an blues/rock band i was in.To bad the band didnt last long it was fun stuff. Anyhow belive it or not my country band does Kansas city and we do it out of E. Although we are county we throw in some old rock and roll on the crowd now and then.

I never listened to Duck on this and will do so. Find the key and have at it trying to find his cues. Developing your ear is the most important tool you can have. I never look at tab and do most songs from recordings by ear or chord sheets from the bandleader or songwriters. Not that tab wont help, its just getting your ear in tune opens the window to learning songs on the fly and quickly.

One tool a TBer told me about a few years back is a Tascam bass trainer. It allows you to play CDs or now MP3s of music and drop out the bass ,transpose keys, slow down parts etc so you can learn songs quickly. I play in an original and cover Country band and also did rock. This gadget mades learning so much easyer. If your pressed for time like me and it sounds like you are you owe it to yourself to get one.

The track I have for play along is off of Albert Kings "Born Under A Bad Sign". After I drink a little more coffee I'll be heading to the woodshed. Someone else told me the tune was in A. Getting the key right should be easy enough :-)

While I have nothing against it. I'm starting to learn that tab isn't "all that". It's only as good as the person that wrote it out.
Case in point I had five different tabs to Margaritaville and none of them sound like the recording.

That is a good song to learn and fun to play. I have never heard it done in A, but that is just me. The last band I was in played it in D due to the singer's preference. The original A King version is in F#. Be careful copying from his records as he recorded several different versions, differing both in song structure and key. A great place to start is the version on which Donald "Duck" Dunn plays, you can find the music written out and played on the book/cd "What Duck Done". He plays it in F#. the key line follows the pattern f#-g#-b-c#-e-c#, f#-g#-b-e(below f#)-c#. The line f#-g#-b-c# is also used in the song and then there is the unusual turnaround. Listen to the song to get the timings. I might write out the tab and notation in a few days and post it.

Born Under A Bad Sign (from the album of the same name) was the FIRST song I ever actually sat down and learned. Quite recently I might add. From there I went on to BB's The Thrill Is Gone. Back to Albert and the Duck for a little Crosscut Saw.

Took a short break and went to Margaritaville :-)
Now I'm looking to go to Kansas City.

Crosscut Saw, another one of my favs, learned that one a long time ago. If you like the latin beat blues songs, check out The Booty Song by Little Charlie and the Nightcats, it is in Bb with an unconventional song structure, very cool song.

I'm listenning to the Kansas City version from AK's Born Under A Bad Sign disk. I don't think it's in F#, it's probably C but they may not be tuned to concert pitch.

There is a quick 4 on the 2nd measure but only for the 1st 2 verses.

So it is a basic I IV V - 12 bar pattern (with the quick 4 for the 1st 2 verses).

There is a 4 measure intro V VI I I and at the end they reapeat the last 4 measures (the V VI I I pattern) 3X before ending

After the stops there is a basic walk up from the C to the F and the pattern continues at the 4th measure.

I have the old CD Tascam and i am shocked i have not worn it out yet. That box will help you alot. Tab as you know is seldom correct another reason i stay clear of it. Between the coffee the trainer and your drive i am sure you will get these songs down quickly.

Once you get to the F continue the 12 bar pattern from the F
(It's actually the 5th measure - not the 4th - sorry)
