Start with basic stuff, look for the slap/pop riff in Can't Stop and Aeroplane by RHCP for example.

You could go back to the original source: Sly and the Family Stone's "Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin)". It's not too tough.

Speaking of basic slap/pop lines, what would you guys recommend for a more intermediate slap/pop line?

Thanks in advance.

If you want to take your slapping further, I recommend getting the book Slap It! It will give you tons of real funky ideas.

Higher Ground is the first one that everyone learns.
More intermediate? Hmm.
Golden Boy, by Primus.

Make sure all of your fingers are sort of closed up, with the thumb sticking out, then to pop, grab the string with the index, and spin your wrist away from it in a circular motion.

Is it bad to start learn slapping and popping with 5 string bass or should I learn it with my 4 string ?

IMO you should learn with whatever you feel most comfortable. If you're used to your 5, then thats the way to go.

I'm more comfortable playing my 5 strings bass as it is much lighter to play than my old 4 string Ibanez... So I think I will try learning it with my 5 string Yamaha..

Flea's lines are pretty simple IMO, if hes already been slapping for a few months he wont have any problem with them. Intermediate level stuff is a notch harder, with alot more hammer on/pull offs/mute on slap/pop on octave at high speed kinda thing.

Dont think being able to play Flea's lines makes you a good level slapper, there is stuff much much harder to play, Flea's stuff is really (IMO anyway) beginner level lines, they sound good because he has great technique and they work real well with a more aggressive slap style, but for the more funky/groovy fills you'll need to try harder stuff.
