Everybody Wants Some: Halen

Sign in to disble this ad
All:

I am trying to figure out how to play "Everybody Wants Some" by Van Halen. My copy of the song is making it hard to "hear" the whole bass line.

It sounds like he is either using a five string or is tuned down.

Anyone familiar with the song? I would love some input on the structure of the song and perhaps a tab link.

Thanks
Bob

On the original recording, both guitar and bass are downtuned one half step. Also, Michael Anthony (well, it's supposed to be him) played his 4-string bass with a pick and the pick attack is very prominent on this tune. Very growly and cool tone, BTW!

I want to transcribe this song for two reasons: First, I'm not a pick player but if I were going to play this tune live I'd use one, trying to replicate that tone. So it's a good chance to practice my underdeveloped pick skills with a cool and easy song.

Second, I clearly remember when "Women And Children First" was released in my country, back in 1980. I considered myself a huge Van Halen fan (didn't know anything about playing an instrument, BTW) and loved the album's cover and back cover photos. Ultra cool band pictures and overall cover design! But when I got to hear it, it was a huge disappointment. I hated that album. The only song that I liked (but wasn't so enthusiastic about it either) was "And The Cradle Will Rock", the album opener.

But time has passed and now I ask myself why I hated that album so much at the time. Not as great as their debut album, but not bad either. "Everybody Wants Some!!" was one of the worst songs of the album to me but now I really like it, so transcribing and playing it is kind of "making justice" to me.

You have three options: Downtuning your 4-stringer to sound in the same key, playing it one half step higher with standard tuning or playing it with a 5-string. How do you plan to play it?

I'm extremely busy these days but this song is really easy to transcribe. I think I'll post the transcription tomorrow.

Candidly it would be easier to play with a 4 string tuned regularly, however I could tune down.

OK, here it is in standard notation and tablature. A simple but cool line:

I read "Michael Anthony" and thought "ride the open E string"

Mike Anthony is not a revolutionary player and certainly the least notable member of Van Halen, But He was not a bad player and supported Eddie quite well on those early albums.
Later during the Hagar era, Eddie played a lot more bass on record.

Michael is a great bass player. You might want to actually listen to the music before you say ride the open e string.
