Here's my transcription of the bass riff. I can tell you it's accurate (From the original studio version. Mr. Edwards played it slightly different live).

This is an excellent transcription. Not that anyone would likely ever notice, but I think the final note Alvaro shows--an eighth-note F#--is usually two sixteenth-notes: an F# and a G. Also, I think the song is in the E dorian mode, which has a key signature of two sharps and eliminates the need for the accidental (#) on the C in the run-up in the second measure.

IIRC, Bernard uses this pattern during the choruses, but switches to a simpler version of it during the verses. If I get a chance to write out the verse pattern in the next few days, I'll post it.

Big bump!

Alvaro,
I wanted to thank you for this transcription. I practiced it all last night (I'm positive my neighbors hate me now) and I've got it down pretty well. One thing I noticed about his lines (especially "We are family") is those 16th notes that land on the "a" of the 4 instead of being on the 1. Jamerson does that a lot too, but mostly with 8th notes. It kinda leads you into the kick drum on the one. What is this technique called? I need to master it because it totally grooves.

The technique is called anticipation. You're basically jumping to the next measure before everyone else gets there. Very funky.

Is it like playing ahead of the beat or does it just pertain to the first note of the measure?

I recently transcribed the live version from the album "Live at the Budokan" for anyone interested. You can find it here.

That's a cool looking transcription (I love the Live at the Budokan DVD btw, not only Bernard and Niles playing with Omar Hakim, but Jill Jones on vocals too - very nice!).

Hi Paul, yes it's an excellent live DVD! Well worth the money!!

For those after it, they may also find it under the name "Live in Japan" - I think they changed the name of it, though I believe it's the same show.

thread resurrection.

a lot of people on youtube not only notate this incorrectly but play it incorrectly as well. that last 16th note leading into the next measure's 1 is the key. the people who play it incorrectly might play in time to the backing drum track but lose the original feel.

as a side note, people on youtube are unnecessarily cruel if the poster gets the feel wrong. and great site, alvaro!
