Help with Oud Style Music

Sign in to disble this ad
Recently I listened to a few recording of people playing ouds on youtube. (which is an ancestor of the guitar, and I type of Lute I beleive) Most of the music sounded really great and utilized alot of open strings and vibrato's (ouds are fretless-like my bass ) I think I could replicate alot of cool oud music on my bass because my 5 string is going to be tuned to eadgc which is similar to the oud tuning ceadgc and then I have my 4 string fretless, so yeah, it might be possible to play the same style music and sound pretty groovy.

Does anybody know any scales or tabs of any music of this sort? I am also interested in any sort of foreign scales and things like that, so if you know any, post the links so I can see please! I think it would be useful to learn this and fun to play when jamming with friends.

I like any middle eastern, or early european scale, and and others as well, so if you have any music to listen to or to show me the tabs I would appreciate it.

Also, if anybody has any information on ouds or is interested in them, talk to me. I'm interested in constructing one with a relative that makes violins and other insturments out of piano wood often, so I think if he helps me it will turn out well, I will have to purchase strings online though.

I like to use my ear to absorb the playing style and phrasing. I'd reccomend picking up some Hamza Al Din- he is an amazing oudist.

As for scales, I believe it uses the Arabic Maqam music system and there's a very comprehensive site on it...google time.

Thanks!

Yeah I noticed alot of open string playing, I could probably learn it a bit simply from watching video's because I can see what they are doing very well on the one's i've seen so far.

Now that I have a start at what I need to look for i'll try to find some stuff to learn and i'll let you guys know how it goes. Mabey i'll record some stuff a bit after I get some of it down.

Here's some things I've found (I am not the author).

Not Oud style but I thought I'd post it.

Japanese Scale

E|-8-9---------------------9-8-|

Also this was helpful (to me anyway)
