how does he do it?

I've been trying to play this since the cd came out, and i just cant get my bass to sound like he does it. what is he doin?

To do that, release the pressure from your left hand finger right after you pluck each note. This will mute each note after it is played.

plus, he could be using an effect like the tab said. However, the sound he is getting seems to be coming more from the way he is playing it rather than the effect

Oh, I think you just need to mute the note. Like, when you play the string, then instantly mute it with another finger. Or I think it goes so or something...

I really think that he is using an effect... he has had that same sound on other songs as well... such as "Sir Psyco Sexy"

First:
The tab is wrong. He plays the little "875" line, or whatever, on the D string - that makes a big difference in the sound as well as the ease of muting.
Second:
He's using an old jazz bass with 30-year old flatwound strings.
