I need help with the chord progression for Another Sat. Night by Sam Cooke

I found this, but it just doesn't sound right. Right now all I'm doing is playing the root note (ie when it says "Another [G] Saturday Night, but I..." I just keep playing a G note (3rd fret e-string)) and it just doesn't sound right at all. Ocasionally I'll hear a right note be overall it just doesn't sound good. Am I doing something wrong? I'm just now learning how to play using chord progressions and I'm not very good, so I figured I'd get the root notes down and then build upon that from the major scale, but if I can't get the root notes to sound right then what can I do? Or am I doing all of this completely wrong? Please help!

Another [G] Saturday Night, but I [C] ain't got nobody
[G] I got some money, 'cause I [D] just got paid
[G] How I wished I had [C] someone to talk to
[G] I'm in an [D] awful [G] way, take this

[G] I got to town a [D] month ago,
I [G] seen a lot of girls since [C] then
If I could [G] meet them I could get them
But as [C] yet I haven't met them
That's [G] why I'm in the [C] shape I'm [G] in

Another [G] Saturday Night, but I [C] ain't got nobody
[G] I got some money, 'cause I [D] just got paid
[G] How I wished I had [C] someone to talk to
[G] I'm in an [D] awful [G] way, take this

[G] Now, another fella [D] told me,
He had a [G] sister who looked just [C] fine
Instead of [G] being my deliverance
She [C] had a strange resemblance
To a [G] cat named [C] Franken [G] stein

Another [G] Saturday Night, but I [C] ain't got nobody
[G] I got some money, 'cause I [D] just got paid
[G] How I wished I had [C] someone to talk to
[G] I'm in an [D] awful [G] way, take this

It's a [G] hard on a [C] fella,
when [G] he don't know his way [D] around
If [G] I won't find me a honey
[C] to help me spend my money
I'm [G] gonna have to [D] blow this [G] town, hear

Another [G] Saturday Night, but I [C] ain't got nobody
[G] I got some money, 'cause I [D] just got paid
[G] How I wished I had [C] someone to talk to
[G] I'm in an [D] awful [G] way, take this

I think it may be in A. Sometimes they have these chord charts spelled out as if you are playing a guitar with a capo.

Try substituting an A for G, D for C and E for D and see how that sounds.

Also, the Cat Stevens vesion, if you're listening to that is probably in a differnet key all together.
