I need to learn a song on my bass to impress my parents. What song is easy to learn yet holds a wow factor for a beginner?

Even if you play "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" for your parents, I'm sure they'd be impressed.

There are plenty of easy songs to learn, it depends on what type of music you like.

You can try U2s "With or Without You." It's only about four notes and if you play along with the song it's very impressive.

My first whole song was an Offspring tune... "Gotta Get Away"

Really simple, cool little slide.

im also a beginner and the first song i tried to learn was mr brighside... then i did miss murder, and i think it sounds cooler. look up tabs for it, and if ure really slow, just keep practicing, ive been playing for like 2 weeks and can play it now really easy, but when i first started my first couple days of having bass i sucked and was slow :P but just memorize ure finger patterns and stuff :S

No matter how hard I try, there's just something special about that line, that I can't emulate.

A few classic basslines your folks will most likely know:

Come Together - The Beatles.
Stand By Me - Ben E King.
Money - Pink Floyd.

And a big +1 for Another One Bites The Dust, not only a great bassline, but people recognise it

It's also a really cruisy line to play...kinda like Sunshine of your Love (Cream) and dare I say it, the "bass" in Seven Nation Army (White Stripes).
