journey - Don't Stop Believing

Me and a couple buddies are starting up a little cover band to play some local bars and whatnot and are going to cover Don't Stop Believing by Journey. I was just wondering if anyone knew if the bass guitarist for Journey is using a pick on this song. It sounds like he is but I want to make sure.

Great song, and fun to play. For years, my tone was completely influenced by this song.

Ross Valoy was the bassist on the original recording (Randy Jackson was their touring bassist for a few years). This recording was likely done with finger, not a pick. Playing close to the bridge, and using a bit of chorus, will get you a sound close to this one.

There was a thread on this topic a few years ago.

Definitely fingerstyle on that one. Whenever I play Escape-era Journey on my Jazz, I favor the bridge pickup also.

Fingers, favor the bridge pup just a bit, play close to the bridge, and maybe boost your mids a touch. My tone and style has a lot of Journey influence. For some reason that tone and style really work. Many of the bass lines I do at church sound very Journey-esque.

Valory plays finger style and close to the bridge. He also tunes his bass to BEAD on many songs, but not all of them (on Stone on Love he goes to the 12th on the G, which becomes tricky with BEAD tuning). I have never seen him with a 5 strings.

He also used a T-40 during the Escape era, with the phasing on, you might have to play a bit to get the sound right.

Valory's bass lines are always fun to play and relatively easy to learn.
