It doesn't look like TuxGuitar does bass tabs.

I use Finale Print Music. It's not free, but works on the Mac. It's fairly accurate with tabs (but not always right on). The only problem is you have to scan sheet music as a .tiff file so it can convert it to tab. It's a fairly easy process: Scan sheet music; have Print Music convert it to tab; print it out; play.

Tux Guitar DOES do Bass tabs... you have to define the staff as Bass Clef and the instrument as four string and set the tuning if different from standard.

Do the staff in the Clef item of the "Composition" menu and the instrument in the Properties item of the "TrackŁ menu

You can input notes using the fretboard view if you find that more convenient.

See screenshots:

playing a Guitar Pro file

It also reads and saves GP3/4/5 files as well as imports/exports MIDI.

The current version has a bug in that when loading in a file, it reverts the staff to treble clef so you have to reset it.

Cool. That wasn't immediately apparent from looking at the web site. It looks like a pretty nice program though. Hopefully they'll get the bugs worked out in upcoming releases.

as I said before it can open and save guitar pro files and according to the open files dialog, it can open *.ptb files which to my untrained eye could be powertab files. Don't know as I don't have any available to play with.

file open dialog

in case you're wondering, I'm not running windows or OSX. I'm running Ubuntu Linux 6.06 version with KDE desktop
